Bloodstone Necklace, the Stone of Courage
Bloodstone is a deep green chalcedony with natural red spots of iron oxide that look like drops of blood. The ancient Greeks called it heliotrope, “the one that turns the sun”, and believed it could change the way light falls on it. In the Middle Ages a legend said the red spots were drops of Christ’s blood that fell on green stone at the foot of the cross, and from then on it was carried as a stone of strength and sacrifice.
Today it is chosen for the same reason: when you need endurance and the courage to keep going.
Traditionally Used For
- Courage and determination – carried as a talisman during exams, hard work or big decisions.
- Recovery – for periods of tiredness, physical or mental, and for getting back on your feet.
- Grounding – in meditation it helps keep attention in the present moment.
- Change – for times of transformation, when the old is gone and the new is not here yet.
Cleansing and Care
Bloodstone is a hard stone and can be rinsed briefly under running water, then dried well. You can also leave it overnight in moonlight or next to clear quartz or selenite. Wipe it with a soft cloth, keep it away from detergents and perfume, and store it apart from softer stones so it does not scratch them.
Crystals are a complement to your own practice and do not replace medical or psychological care.
