White Dammar Resin Incense
White dammar is the resin of Vateria indica, a tree from India. It comes as pale, milky-white pieces that give off a fresh, lightly lemon scent when burned. In Malay, damar means light, a reference to how easily the resin fractures and to the brightness of its smoke.
- Fresh, sweet and balsamic – one of the lightest resin incense scents, it does not overpower a small room.
- Traditionally burned to lift the spirit – used to dispel heaviness and melancholy and to bring light into a space.
- Easy to recognise – white, milky pieces that break apart easily, which is where the name comes from.
How to Burn White Dammar
- Light a charcoal disc for about 20 seconds until it catches. Hold it with tongs, never with your fingers.
- Set it on sand or soil in a heat-proof bowl and wait a few minutes, until the edges turn grey.
- Place a small piece of resin on top and let the smoke rise. Add more as it fades.
For a darker, deeper smoke, try black dammar.
