Latin name: Vateria indica
Also know as: White Dammar, Damar gum, damar, Mata kucing, Batu, cat’s eye
Origin: India
Vateria indica – White Dammar
White Dammar is an aromatic resin mainly secreted by the Dipterocarpaceae family of trees in Southeastern Asia, of which those of the genera Hopea, Shorea and Balanocarpus are the most important commercially.
White Dammar is a light, white resin with a milky finish, which emits a light lemony scent when burnt. In the Malaysian language, the word “Damar” means light and is a reference to the light fracturing quality of this resin. It also describes its ethereal nature. Dammar is used to dispel the demons of depression and bring light to the depth of the soul.
Key Benefits of White Dammar:
Fragrance: fresh, sweet, and balsamic
Properties: lifts the spirit and brings light to the darkness, fights against sadness, depression and melancholy.
How to Burn White Dammar Resin:
Light the charcoal with matches or lighter for about 20 seconds until it self-ignites. Use tongs to hold it up (never hold it with your fingers alone or you might get burned). Place the lit charcoal in a bowl or any incense burner. The bowl or incense burner should be filled with sand or dirt. Let the charcoal warm for a few minutes. (It turns gray around the edges when it is ready) Now you are ready! Add a small amount of dammar resin on top of the charcoal. The dammar resin will burn and soon release essential, aromatic oils through the smoke. Continue to place resins or powder on charcoal as they burn out and smoke decreases for a continuous burn.
