Black Onyx Mala with 108 Beads
A mala is a string of prayer beads, used in Hindu and Buddhist practice to count mantras, prayers or breaths. It has 108 beads because 108 is a sacred number in both traditions. You move one bead through your fingers with every repetition, and when you reach the start again you know the round is complete, without counting in your head.
This mala is made from natural 6 mm black onyx. Onyx is traditionally a stone of stability, protection and inner strength, which makes it a good companion for practice: it helps the mind settle and stay in the body.
How to Use the Mala
- Mantra or prayer – hold the mala in one hand and move one bead for each repetition, 108 in one round.
- Breathing – one bead for each slow breath, when you need to come back to yourself.
- Wear it – as a long necklace, or wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet, as a daily reminder of your practice.
Traditionally, black onyx is associated with stress relief, a feeling of security, better concentration and perseverance. Like any practice tool, it works through regular use, not overnight.
Care
Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid long soaking, chemicals and perfume, and protect it from hard knocks. To recharge it, leave it overnight in moonlight or next to clear quartz. Your own regular practice charges it most.
A mala is a tool for practice and does not replace medical or psychological care.
