The chasen is the bamboo whisk at the centre of this set. It is carved from a single piece of bamboo, split into fine tines by hand. There is no suitable alternative to it. A frother makes foam. A chasen makes a practice.

This matcha set contains everything needed to prepare japanese matcha the way it was meant to be prepared: bowl, whisk, dosing spoon, and whisk holder, along with 50g of shade-grown ceremonial matcha to begin immediately. Each tool has a function refined over centuries of use in the Japanese tea ceremony. Nothing in this set is decorative.

• Chawan (bowl) – wide and shallow by design, not aesthetics. The shape exists for whisking. Both hands around a warmed bowl, before the first sip, is where the ritual begins.
• Chasen (bamboo whisk) – split from a single piece of bamboo into an array of fine tines. Creates the fine foam that properly prepared matcha carries on its surface. Cannot be replaced by a frother without losing what the preparation gives you.
• Chashaku (dosing spoon) and kusenaoshi (whisk holder) – the spoon measures and the holder preserves the tines between uses. The most delicate component of the set lasts significantly longer with one.

How to Use Your Matcha Set

Warm the chawan with hot water first, then pour it out before adding the matcha. Sift one to two teaspoons of matcha into the bowl, add water at 70-80°C, and whisk in a W-motion until fine foam rises to the surface. Rinse the chasen immediately after use and set it on the kusenaoshi to dry. The 90 seconds this takes is not a delay before your morning. It is your morning.
